Archie Williams triumphs at Red Brown tournament

Basketball tournament season is in full swing and two Marin teams won titles last week, led by host Archie Williams who prevailed at the Carl “Red” Brown tournament Saturday night.

The San Rafael boys team continued its hot start to the season by winning three games at the Redwood Empire Invitational Basketball Tournament in Healdsburg.

Girls basketball highlights included a career night from Branson School’s leading scorer and an impressive Redwood win over San Domenico.

Football highlights included a Terra Linda sophomore scoring a hat trick in a wild non-league win over Archie Williams and a standout from Branson scoring a late winner to keep the Bulls perfect this season. The Marin Catholic boys and Marin Academy girls also picked up key victories against Marin opposition.

Ephraim Sohn and Brian Wright, Archie Williams men’s basketball

Sohn was named tournament MVP while Wright was an all-tournament selection for the host Peregrine Falcons, who capped a 4-0 week by winning the Carl “Red” Brown title on Saturday. Sohn had 16 points, five rebounds and three assists in the championship game, a 53-45 overtime win over San Anselmo’s neighbor San Domenico. Wright had 18 points, three rebounds and two blocks against the Panthers. Wright had a big scoring week overall, scoring 30 points in a non-league win over Tam before scoring 16 against Kennedy and 20 against Hayward in the tournament. Sohn had another good game against Hayward with 15 points, six rebounds and four steals.

Gavin Early, San Domenico men’s basketball

Early scored 25 points, making two game-clinching free throws in the final minute of regulation to help the Panthers force overtime in an eventual loss to Archie Williams at the Red Brown Tournament on Saturday. Early was named to the all-tournament team after scoring 13 points in San Domenico’s opening win over Skyline of Oakland, then posting a line of 14 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals in the half. final against Justin-Siena.

Gio Brovelli, Luke Shapiro and Will Healy, San Rafael men’s basketball

San Rafael swept four games this week, winning the last three to claim the title at the Redwood Empire Invitational Basketball Tournament. Brovelli earned tournament MVP honors, scoring 30 points in the quarterfinals against AIMS College Prep, 27 in the semifinals against Kelseyville, then 26 more in the final against Healdsburg. Will Healy was named the tournament’s best defensive player with three games of double-digit rebounds (14, 10 and 13). Shapiro was an all-tournament selection with a stat line of 22 points, five rebounds and four assists in the title game. Shapiro also had 22 points, seven rebounds and four assists in the semifinals.

Avery Myerberg, Branson women’s basketball

Myerberg made eight 3-pointers en route to a career-high 36 points as the Bulls earned their only victory at the Windsor tournament on Saturday with a 66-34 win over Casa Grande.

Maya Saibel, Redwood women’s basketball

Saibel made six 3-pointers in an 18-point game as the Giants won their second intra-county matchup of the season, recording a 71-47 victory over San Domenico on Saturday. Redwood’s next game is a road game against Branson at 4:30 p.m. next Saturday.

Braeden Carroll, Novato wrestling

Carroll was the lone champion for the Sailors at San Marin High’s Green and Gold tournament on Saturday, winning the heavyweight division after a resounding victory over Arroyo’s Austin Celzo. Carroll, a two-time MCAL champion, was the top seed in the tournament and won all four of his matches after receiving a first-round bye.

Johan Cifuentes, boys football Terra Linda

Cifuentes scored a hat trick as TL came back from a two-goal first-half deficit for a 4-3 win over Archie Williams on Tuesday. Cifuentes scored TL’s first goal in the 20th minute, then scored the third goal to tie the game at 3-3 with about 15 minutes left. Cifuentes added the final goal with about five minutes left in the game. Cifuentes also scored twice for the Trojans when they were 0-1-1 at the Mission City Invitational at San Rafael High.

Griffin Ochoa, Marin Catholic men’s soccer

Ochoa scored twice, including a late winner, as Marin Catholic earned a 3-2 nonleague victory over Novato on Saturday. Ochoa scored MC’s second goal off an assist from Griffin Jones and got the third after an assist from Dylan Hyman.

Riley Pearson, Branson girls soccer

Pearson scored three times in as many games last week, perhaps most importantly netting a stoppage-time winner to keep the Bulls perfect this season with a 4-3 win over Urban on Thursday. Pearson had already scored in the 63rd minute to give Branson a 3-2 lead. Urban tied the game in the 69th minute, but Pearson gifted the winner an unassisted goal in the 82nd minute. Pearson also scored the first goal in a 4-0 road win over Ukiah on Tuesday. The Bulls have won all seven of their games so far this season.

Sarah Farese, Redwood soccer player

Farese led the way again in week two of the Fremont Firebird Classic, scoring two goals and adding an assist as Redwood defeated Sobrato 5-0 on Saturday. The Giants went 3-0-1 in the contest, with Farese scoring six times.

Kacy Walker, Marin Academy girls soccer

Walker scored two goals last week, including the game-winner in a 1-0 win over Marin Catholic on Friday. Walker’s initial shot from inside the 6-yard box was blocked by MC goalkeeper Finn Seymore. Several players from both teams gathered in a scrum in front of the goal, but Walker, essentially lying on the ground at this point, managed to gain the upper hand to lead 1-0. Walker also scored MA’s third goal in a 3-1 win over Terra Linda on Tuesday.
