Concerns over pop-up event at Irish pub

Colchester Borough Council will consider the event license application (LDRS)

Plans for an Irish-themed pop-up pub event over the Christmas period are to be considered after safety concerns were raised.

Live Tour Promotions has drawn up plans for the Molly O’Reilly event at the All Weather Football Ground, off Cowdray Avenue, Colchester.

She has applied for an alcohol license from December 6 to 31, which Colchester City Council’s sub-licensing committee will consider on Monday.

Mark Goacher, Green Party councilor for the Castle ward, was concerned the event location posed a risk.

“I am deeply concerned about the impact this application will have on local residents and believe it is poorly thought out,” he said.

“There is a higher risk to public safety – potentially to local residents and also to drunken revelers spilling out onto Cowdray Avenue in large numbers as they return home.”

Live Tour Promotions is behind other Colchester events including Colchester Oktoberfest, the Ibiza Orchestra Experience and the Sausage and Cider Festival, the Local Democracy Reporting Service reports.

It has been in the city since 2017 and states on its website that Molly O’Reilly’s is an “exciting new events concept.”

His application seeks permission to sell alcohol on-site and offer live and recorded music indoors and indoor dance performances for 1,000 people.

Documents prepared for the meeting show 69 written objections were submitted against the plans, along with a petition with 48 signatures.

Organizers of the petition said they were “not killjoys” and believed young people should be able to have fun.

However, they felt the location was not suitable and would not benefit the area financially.
