Live updates, channel for game of week 13

On the last Saturday in November, Ohio State football will face rival Michigan in a contest so high-stakes it’s known simply as “The Game.”

The week before, however, the Buckeyes have what should be a stiffer test in a game with much bigger implications for the College Football Playoff — and it’s against, of all teams, Indiana.

No. 2 Ohio State will host the No. 5 Hoosiers on Saturday at Ohio Stadium in Columbus in what could be one of the most important games of the 2024 college football season.

Coach Ryan Day and the Buckeyes enter the game in a great position to make the playoffs and earn a rematch against Oregon in the Big Ten championship game. Since a crushing 32-31 loss to the Ducks on Oct. 12, Ohio State has won four straight, a streak highlighted by a 20-13 win over No. 3 Penn State on Nov. 2.

Although the Buckeyes could potentially withstand a loss and still make the playoffs, wins over Indiana and Michigan would all but guarantee them a spot in the field no matter what happens against Oregon in Indianapolis.

Beating the Hoosiers, however, won’t be as easy as it has been for much of the series history between the two programs. In its first season under coach Curt Cignetti, Indiana had arguably its best season ever, going 10-0. The mark was made possible by an offense led by quarterback Kurtis Rourke who is averaging 43.9 points per game, the second-best mark among FBS programs. Although the Hoosiers have been criticized for their relatively weak schedule, especially in recent weeks as they have emerged as a viable playoff threat, they have blown out the teams they have beaten, with an average margin of victory of 30.1 points.

Ohio State vs. Indiana Predictions

Bill Rabinowitz, The Columbus Dispatch: Ohio State 38, Indiana 24

Indiana is real, despite its flexible schedule. His passing game will put stress on OSU’s cornerbacks and his defensive front will make running the ball a challenge. But Ohio State has a deeper, more talented roster and plenty of experience to play in high-level games. IU will land some blows, but the Buckeyes should prevail.

Joey Kaufman, The Columbus Dispatch: Ohio State 34, Indiana 21

The reengineering of Ohio State’s defense following last month’s loss to Oregon faces a real barometer test from Indiana, which brings the nation’s second-highest scoring offense to Columbus and is led by an experienced sixth quarterback, Kurtis Rourke. that keeps the Hoosiers on schedule. The challenge is for the secondary to hold up better than it did against Dillon Gabriel and his talented cast of playmakers six weeks ago. The ultimate bet here is that the Buckeyes’ big-game experience will carry the day against a team that has faced just one opponent this year with a winning record compared to Ohio State’s four, including two among the top five. This will make the difference in the second half.

Rob Oller, The Columbus Dispatch: Ohio State 33, Indiana 17

Ohio State can’t afford to get off to another sleepy start, nor risk having to play catch-up against a legitimately dynamic IU offense. Knowing this, the Buckeyes shoot and put enough cushion between themselves and the Hoosiers to prevent things from getting too nervy in the fourth quarter. It’s been a great run for the crimson and cream, but in the end, IU has no answer for the more talented, scarlet and gray.
