To say the least, given that he is currently in the exploration phase of his film career, the Star Wars the lore looks exactly like the world that needs to be explored through Villeneuve’s eyes. But before fans can even consider that thought, the director has already expressed his disapproval of George Lucas’ worst mistake with the iconic soap opera.

Although Denis Villeneuve is considered one of the most talented and respectable filmmakers in the entire entertainment industry, the Star Wars the franchise won’t be one to receive a contribution from him anytime soon. And, for the record, this remains true despite the fact that the Blade Runner 2047 The director was in fact himself obsessed with the space opera tradition.

During a recent appearance on The City with Matthew Belloni podcast, he shared that, being part of the target audience of 10 years old at the time, the first Software movie ‘went through my brain like a silver bullet.’

I mean, The Empire Strikes Back is the movie I’ve waited for the most in my life. I mean, I’ve seen the movie a billion times on screen. You know, it’s like I was traumatized by the first movie.

At the same time, Villeneuve also emphasizes that at the time when Return of the Jedi came out, he couldn’t have been angrier with George Lucas.

Look, I love Star Wars. The problem is that everything went off the rails in 1983 with Return of the Jedi. It’s a long story, but I was about 15 years old and my best friend and I wanted to take a taxi and go to Los Angeles and talk to George Lucas because we were so angry.

According to him, the 1983 film ‘turned out to be a comedy for children‘, one of his biggest faults in his eyes being the Ewoks – a species he doesn’t like even today. For those unfamiliar, they were the small, furry bipedal natives of the forest moon of Endor, with brown and black fur, large eyes, and a small nose, who aided the Rebel Alliance in the Battle of Endor.

That said, he no longer wants to direct a film for the science fiction space opera either. As Villeneuve continued to express during the interview:

I thought Star Wars crystallized into its own mythology, very dogmatic, and with that, it became like a recipe and more surprises. And so I don’t dream of doing Star Wars, honestly, because I feel like the code is very codified.

Of course, this statement doesn’t sit well with a lot of people, especially those who ostensibly helped Episode VI – Return of the Jedi garnering a new 82% critic score and 94% audience rating on RT, coupled with its $482.4 million worldwide gross on its $32.5 million budget (via Box Office Mojo). At the same time, part of the fandom nevertheless supports Villeneuve’s opinion.

On the one hand, while there are many supporters who defend Return of the Jedi Based on Villeneuve’s opinions, other fans support his taste and call him bold for bringing up the 1983 film first. Additionally, some fans from this other part of the fandom call this the exact reason why the director should tame a character. Star Wars film in the first place.

As for

Well, as outrageous as his opinions may seem to many, it is also true that the world still needs a visionary like Denis Villeneuve to share his expertise with the films of the Star Wars saga. That said, it remains to be seen whether the filmmaker will one day decide to change his mind about the saga and agree to do the same – for the sake of the fans, if not for anything else.
