From CMs to Deputy CMs: Maharashtra’s political change | Nagpur News

Nagpur: After Eknath Shinde took oath as deputy CM of Maharashtra, he became the second CM to accept a ‘lesser’ role. It was Devendra Fadnavis in 2022, who gave up his chance to become CM following orders from the BJP brass and backed Shinde for the top post. Even though these two are the only ones who have gone from CM to deputy CMMaharashtra has many examples of chief ministers, who had to resign and settle for a mere cabinet post.
The first case dates back to Shankarrao Chavan, a Congress stalwart, who served as chief minister from February 1975 to April 1977. A year after his tenure ended, Chavan was inducted into CM Sharad Pawar’s cabinet and saw himself entrust key portfolios such as water resources and industries.
Shivajirao Nilangekar, another Congress stalwart, was the chief minister of Maharashtra from June 1985 to March 1986. His tenure ended following a political controversy and he remained in the political wilderness for almost two decades. It was the Sushilkumar Shinde-led Congress-NCP government in 2003 that found an opportunity for Nilangekar. However, the rehabilitation did not last long and Nilangekar was dropped a year later.
Union minister Narayan Rane was propelled to the CM post by his mentor Balasaheb Thackeray in 1999, a post he held for nine months until the state went to polls. In 2005, Rane left Sena to join the Congress and was appointed revenue minister in the Vilasrao Deshmukh government. His ministerial journey continued with the next Congress CM Ashok Chavan in 2008 and then with Prithviraj Chavhan in 2010. Rane held several portfolios under three different Congress chief ministers, but was never able to return to the top post. pupil.
Ashok Chavhan served as CM from 2008 to 2010, after which the Congress did not come to power for a decade. In 2019, the former CM was sworn in as a minister in the Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA government, before leaving the party to join the BJP.
The last two cases of CM accepting a deputy position are well known. Devendra Fadnavis, who was CM from 2014 to 2019, worked as deputy CM from 2022 to 2024. And Eknath Shinde was sworn in as deputy CM earlier this month, after ruling the state since 2022.
