Susan Davies retires from TOSC

COLORADO SPRINGS — One of the Pikes Peak region’s most dedicated defenders of public lands is stepping down after 15 years of leadership.

Susan Davies is retiring from her position as executive director of the Trails and Open Space Coalition.

“We often tell people we like to be your eyes, ears and voice when it comes to parks, trails and open space,” Davies said.

The Trails and Open Space Coalition (TOSC) is one of only a handful of nonprofit organizations of its kind in the country.

“I would say we have one of the best missions in the city, because why do people move here? Why do people stay here? Why do people come here? This is what exists. And so we can be cheerleaders for what exists.

The TOSC staff is less than five people.

It is a small group that unites its large number of members.

TOSC leaders identify issues and lobby those responsible for decisions impacting Colorado’s outdoor activities.

TOSC often collaborates with other groups that advocate for projects and issues related to Colorado’s public lands.

“I’m still so proud that the last TOPS expansion won 78%,” Davies said. “It wasn’t just our yard signs, it wasn’t just our, you know, our letters to the editor and our information to our membership, but we were part of the success.

Davies and TOSC have also been involved in promoting the outdoors as one of the few healthy options during the pandemic.

She said: “What I discovered with my staff was how imaginative and creative they were. You know, post-COVID, we created Get Out Spread Out, which encourages people to continue to be on our trails and in our parks. “

Today, after 15 years as head of TOSC, Davies is retiring.

“I love what I do. I tell my friends that I wish I didn’t like him so much. It would be a lot easier to walk away, but it’s time.”

She thinks a new perspective is a good thing.

She will also continue to defend public lands and the environment.

“I plan to choose my favorite projects and make a difference where I can.”
