Three people allegedly involved in manufacturing adulterated protein powder of two different brands at a factory in Noida’s Sector 63 were arrested late on Monday evening, after a Delhi-based man suffered health problems following the consumption of the protein powder, senior police officers said on Tuesday.

The suspects were booked for cheating and criminal conspiracy at the Sector 63 police station, and a large quantity of adulterated raw material used in manufacturing the protein powder was recovered from their possession.

The suspects were identified as Sahil Yadav, 27, and Harsh Agarwal, 28, both residents of Indirapuram in Ghaziabad, and Amit Chaubey, 30, resident of Sahibabad in Ghaziabad, police said.

“On Monday, Atin Singhal, 29, a resident of Chandni Chowk in Delhi, approached the Noida police and lodged a complaint alleging that he had ordered a protein powder from an e-commerce company. Following consumption of the powder, he suffered from health problems related to liver and skin,” said Shakti Mohan Avasthy, deputy commissioner of police, Central Noida.

“Based on the complaint, the police traced the factory which was being operated in Block G of Sector 63. When the team raided the factory, it was found that two persons were busy packing the powder in empty boxes,” Avasthy said.

Police said when the suspects were asked to produce the food license and documents required to operate the factory, they tried to mislead them. “Subsequently, food ministry officials were called and it was found that the powder was adulterated,” Avasthy said.

During investigation, it came to light that Yadav worked at a protein powder manufacturing factory in Haryana. “After learning the process of making the powder, he came up with the idea of ​​making a fake version of the powder at low cost to earn more. His friend Agarwal joined him as a partner and opened a factory on December 1,” said Avdhesh Pratap Singh, in-charge of Sector 63 station.

“Later, they hired Chaubey as manager and started manufacturing adulterated powder of two different brands. They sold a package of around 2.5 kilos 8,500 by investing only 1,800 per pack.

The suspect was selling the protein powder with the help of two leading e-commerce companies by calling it a genuine product.

“An investigation is underway to find out the number of boxes sold over the last 10 days. Singhal, who has filed a police complaint, is informed that he is stable,” said SHO Singh.

The suspects were booked under sections 318(4) (cheating) and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Sector 63 police station, and 33 boxes of adulterated protein powder, 2,050 small boxes of capsules, 5,500 empty. boxes, printing and packaging machines, and other counterfeit items used to manufacture the protein powder were recovered from their possession, police said.
