JAL and NEC Introduce AI-Driven Carry-on Baggage Scanning Solution to Avoid Flight Delays

JAL and NEC introduced the “NEC Baggage Counting Solution”, in which AI is used to automatically analyze the quantity and types of carry-on baggage at the boarding gates. The demonstration involved evaluating the solution’s analysis accuracy (detection and classification accuracy) and its alert timing when exceeding storage overload limits to determine its effectiveness.

Cameras installed at the boarding gate capture images, which are analyzed using AI to detect hand luggage carried by passengers, and the detected luggage is classified into predefined categories, and the space that each item would occupy in the overhead compartments is estimated in real time. An alert is triggered when the estimated storage capacity reaches a predefined threshold.
