“This abomination lights up the entire neighborhood”

A new housing development is attracting attention for all the wrong reasons, with one resident calling his model home an “abomination” sure to frustrate neighbors and stargazers.

In the subreddit r/McMansionHell, a local shared an image of the two-story house with large windows to let in natural light during the day. However, the developers apparently decided to leave all the lights on in the unoccupied house after sunset.

“This abomination lights up the entire subdivision,” the original poster wrote about development in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

While one speaker pointed out that leaving lights on was a safety measure, others pointed out how light pollution was not only annoying, but also potentially dangerous to wildlife, not to mention human health.

“It gave me a migraine,” one person said of the dazzling lighting.

“Local zoning should mandate Dark Skies compliance on these new constructions,” suggested another. “What is this ?”

Research suggests that light pollution around the world is having disastrous effects, with fireflies, coral reefs, birds and even trees being negatively affected by artificial light, threatening the biodiversity that contributes to the healthy functioning of our ecosystems and the integrity of our food systems.

Fortunately, as DarkSky International explains, responsible lighting practices can protect the future of the planet and likely save you a lot of money on your utility bills.

For example, sensor-activated outdoor lights reduce electricity consumption while still providing security lighting when needed. You can also turn off lighting when it’s not needed, with smart home technology that makes it easy to schedule dimming or inactivity periods.

A third speaker pointed out that supporting Dark Sky initiatives also ensures that the beauty of the night sky is preserved for nature lovers.

“I don’t see a single star in the sky,” they sadly commented on the OP’s photo.

“It will be better when there is landscaping and it is occupied,” another added hopefully. “Homeowners will install window treatments and not keep all the lights in the house on at the same time.”
