Carolina Forest residents remember frightening scene after shots fired in their neighborhood

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A day after a scary and chaotic shooting in a Carolina Forest neighborhood, residents are sharing their stories from the scene.

HCPD told WMBF News that several people were in custody after shootings in the Avalon neighborhood.

Witnesses reported seeing several masked people drive up and appear to invade a home along Hollybrooke Drive.

“I saw an individual run into the house with a gun in his hand,” Brian Morrison said.

Witnesses said that after the masked people arrived, that’s when they heard gunshots and screams.

“I heard a sound like a gunshot,” Glenn ‘Lizard’ Smith said.

“It sounded like a boom. Like a gunshot,” said another witness.

Witnesses said that seconds after the shots were fired, they saw a man inside the house climb out of an upstairs window, jump from the roof and run across the street.

Neighbors said they believed it was a desperate escape by the man from the group of masked people who were threatening his life.

“He was just sitting on his roof. He told me, ‘Well, people just tried to rob my house,'” a witness said.

A neighbor captured video of this man feeling himself, with what appears to be a gun in his hand.

Neighbors said the gunman ended up trying to hide in other people’s homes to escape the group that was apparently pursuing him, but didn’t have much luck at first.

“After I slammed my door, he changed direction and went into the next door neighbor’s house and terrified her,” Morrison said.

HCPD has not yet identified the people it arrested or confirmed whether they will face criminal charges.

Meanwhile, residents said they were glad they and their families were able to stay safe in a tense and dangerous situation.

“This is a high-powered round. What if it went through the walls into our house? There are children everywhere. There are kids playing here, riding bikes and everything. A lot of people say it’s unacceptable,” one witness said.

“It’s here, on my street. That’s why it’s depressing for me. I was prepared and ready, but he was smart enough not to make it that far,” Smith said.

WMBF News is still waiting for a police report on the incident.
