Hysterical as cat decides to choose neighbor’s house over his own: ‘moved in’

Reddit users are cracking up over a recent post about a cat who decided to reside in a neighbor’s house instead of its own.

Elle Mackesey lives on an old farmhouse in rural Illinois where feral and stray cats commonly roam. About 10 years ago, her neighbors, from whom she rented, intervened to help some stray cats that came to their home, she said. News week.

The first kitten to arrive, Henry, happily entered their home, but the others, Clyde and Mama, hesitated. His neighbors installed a heat lamp, food and water in the garage and have been watching over them every day since.

“I got to know Henry very well through my visits to their home,” she said. “He was extremely talkative and affectionate. I almost never saw Mom or Clyde because they were usually out in the fields hunting or sleeping on the shelves in the garage.”

Mackesey’s relationship with Clyde began after Henry and Mama died last winter and spring. She heard a cat meowing in a shed across the street from her house, went to investigate and spotted Clyde. She sat and petted him, making him comfortable.

Their friendship solidified when she brought him a bowl of wet food, quickly becoming their morning routine. Then Clyde appeared to come to her owner’s house.

“Clyde would sit outside the shed, meow for wet food and attention, then run back through the fields to his other house,” Mackesey said. “He also came back in the evening when he saw me coming home.”

Clyde eventually started sleeping in his car after leaving the windows down one day. His cats also accepted him after seeing how calm and unconcerned he was to their “dramatic and hissy” nature.

“During all of this, I was telling his other family because I didn’t want them to worry, and I also thought it was hilarious,” Mackesey said. “They thought him sleeping in my car was the funniest thing ever.”

Friendship has progressed furtherand the orange cat moved to the cat bed she bought for him and left in his driveway. He eventually ventured inside while she was there and became “pretty comfortable right away.” Soon he would be shouting at the door to be let in; the rest was history.

Fortunately, his family, who had cared for him for a decade, didn’t mind that he finally found a home to feel comfortable in. Mackesey shared how her neighbor’s “outdoor cat moved in” to her home on Dec. 4 in a Reddit. post on r/CatDistributionSystem, which quickly garnered over 11,000 upvotes.

The family was grateful to know Clyde was safe. They tried several times to get him inside, but he would never take more than one step into their house without turning and running away.

They were especially grateful after learning that Clyde had an incident with an animal one night. All they cared about was protecting him from another attack.

“He’s also becoming an older cat at this point, so it makes me happy that he’s found a place he likes to be indoors as he gets older,” she said. “He has been a perfect addition and I love him very much.”

Clyde now sleeps on a couch in Mackesey’s room every night. She lets him and her other cats outside in the morning, but now that it’s winter, they stay inside all day, which doesn’t seem to bother Clyde. He is “fully adapted to the life of an indoor cat”.

She said he recently enjoyed his first catnip mouse. He also likes to chase toys around the house.

“I’m in almost constant contact with his other family and I send them pictures of him all the time,” she said. “They bought me big boxes of wet food to give to him and my other cats. It’s very nice.”

The editors fell in love with Clyde and his comfort in Mackesey’s house. They also applauded the neighbors for letting Clyde stay with her.
