Ashish Shelar, who became BCCI treasurer in October 2022, was sworn in as minister in Nagpur.

The post of BCCI treasurer is likely to remain vacant after BJP leader Ashish Shelar was sworn in as a minister in the Devendra Fadnavis-led Maharashtra state government on Sunday.

Shelar, who became BCCI treasurer in October 2022, was sworn in as one of the Nagpur cabinet ministers after winning the Vandre West seat in the Maharashtra Assembly elections last month.

The Supreme Court rule

The Supreme Court had ruled that no minister or civil servant could become a member of the BCCI while implementing the recommendations of the Lodha committee in 2016.

The apex court had, however, allowed the BCCI to amend its constitution in September 2022, paving the way for MPs to become members of the board. Following this, Shelar became treasurer of the BCCI in October the same year.

Shelar is the second official of the outgoing committee to leave his post after Jay Shah, who quit as BCCI secretary to become president of the International Cricket Council.

Shah began his tenure at the ICC on December 1 when BCCI president Roger Binny appointed joint secretary Devajit Saikia as the acting secretary of the Indian Cricket Board on December 9.

PTI had earlier reported that Saikia would continue in his new role as acting secretary of the BCCI until September 2025, before the position was permanently filled.
