Maharashtra cabinet expansion: 39 MLAs sworn in as ministers in Fadnavis-led government

Maharashtra Cabinet Extension: The much-awaited expansion of the BJP-led Maharashtra government took place on Sunday (December 15), with 39 ministers, taking its strength to 42. Notably, the Maharashtra council of ministers can have a maximum of 43 members, including the minister in chief.

While 33 lawmakers were sworn in as ministers, six were sworn in as state ministers. As part of this expansion, the BJP got 19 ministerial posts, followed by 11 for Shiv Sena, led by Eknath Shinde, and 9 for Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party.

Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan administered oath of office to the new ministers at the Raj Bhavan. For the second time after 1991, the swearing-in ceremony of ministers was organized in Nagpur.

Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2024

The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance won a landslide victory in the elections, winning 235 Assembly seats, while the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi secured only 49 seats. The state Legislative Assembly elections were held in a single phase on November 20. The results of the state elections were declared on November 23 and the names of the elected members of the Legislative Assembly were published in the official gazette of the Government of Maharashtra, with the notification of the ECI. This was done in accordance with the provisions of Section 73 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
