Dog owner gets police visit after neighbor calls – I can’t believe the reason

A dog owner said News week how he was stunned when police and animal control officers arrived to check on his pet after a neighbor mistakenly reported him being “neglected”.

Danny McCarthy from Maryland shared the moment on his TikTok account @mrcolorblind1 in a video with more than 6 million views.

A neighbor thought McCarthy’s dog, Nuko, was left outside in the cold for too long. But as the video shows, her 3-year-old Samoyed is only too happy to lounge on the porch in the winter…because the breed loves the cold, as it is native to the frigid deserts of Siberia.

Fortunately, the situation was quickly resolved when officers arrived.

“I don’t know who called the cops,” McCarthy said. News week. “But I was told that they reported that Nuko was left outside in the cold. Because the cops were so nice and understanding, I wasn’t too worried and found the situation quite funny. I I wasn’t angry with whoever called me, but if the cops had been less understanding, the situation could have turned out differently.”

Animal control also attended to follow up, but left shortly after learning the full story. McCarthy explained that northern breeds like Samoyeds, Great Pyrenees and Malamutes thrive in cold temperatures because of their thick fur and love of winter weather.

The Samoyed breed originated in Siberia, where they were put to work by the Samoyed people herding reindeer and pulling sleds in extremely cold conditions.

They were first recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1906 and today are the 50th most popular dog breed in the United States.

With a thick, double-coated coat of mostly white or cream, their undercoat is soft and fluffy and their outer coat is coarser and water-resistant. This coat combination allows them to withstand temperatures as low as -60°F, meaning the breed often seeks out the cold and may spend extended periods of time outdoors.

The TikTok video quickly garnered thousands of comments from people sharing similar experiences with their cold-loving dogs.

“I have a Great Pyrenees that does NOT come in when it’s cold,” said @anock03. While another shared: “My neighbor is the same race and put up a sign saying, ‘I can’t bring him in.'”

McCarthy was stunned by the response on TikTok as the video gained viral attention. “I didn’t expect the video to blow up on TikTok the way it did, but it’s awesome,” he said. “Everyone seems to love Nuko, and it’s been so fun reading everyone’s comments on the situation.”
