One UI 7 adds new gaming frame rate options, but also removes one

TL;DR

  • One UI 7 introduces a new option called Game Motion Smoothness in the Game Booster app.
  • Smooth gaming motion lets you switch between 60Hz and 120Hz refresh rates.
  • There is no longer an option to reduce frame rates to 48Hz.

Games still look better at higher refresh rates, but you may worry more about your battery life when you’re on the go. One UI 7 added a new option that lets Galaxy owners choose between higher frame rates or longer battery life, but it also removed an option.

In the One UI 7 beta, there is a new option in the Game Booster app called “Gaming motion smoothness” (h/t: SamMobile). Tapping on this option will give you the choice to set the frame rate to 60Hz or 120Hz. As you would expect, the 60Hz setting consumes less battery than the 120Hz option.

However, there are certain limitations. If a game has its own frame rate setting, this option will not work. This is also the case if the game cannot run at a refresh rate above 60Hz.

While it’s nice to have this choice, it seems like this option overrides a different setting. In older versions of One UI, players had the option to lower the refresh rate to 48Hz. This option is now gone if you updated to the One UI 7 beta.

It’s a shame that the 48Hz option is gone, but all hope is not lost. The stable version of One UI 7 won’t roll out until the Galaxy S25, which is expected to arrive in late January. It’s still possible that Samsung will add another lower frame rate option for smooth gaming motion before the update releases.
