Why did Canada ban balloon blowing kits sold on Amazon?

Canada recently issued a warning asking its citizens to refrain from using balloon blowing kits sold on Amazon because they pose a chemical risk.
“Immediately stop using the affected products and dispose of them in accordance with municipal hazardous waste guidelines,” the health agency warned in its advisory published Dec. 13.
The review covers several products like 15pcs bubble ball toy, no burst plastic balloon, colorful magic bubble glue, perfect gift for boys and girls 202 and others.
Health Canada also said Amazon sold 127 units of the affected products in the country between November 2023 and November 2024. So far, no incidents or injuries related to these products have been reported.

Health problems

The authority revealed that inflating the balloons exposes the child to inhaling the vapors of any solvent present. “If children blow this type of solvent-containing balloon for prolonged periods, they may experience early symptoms of depression or of central nervous system dysfunction, including euphoria, hallucinations, dizziness and difficulty coordinating voluntary movements,” he adds, “prolonged exposure may lead to more serious symptoms, including muscle twitching, loss of consciousness and a coma. »

What are balloon blowing kits?

Balloon blowing kits are toys that come with a tube of solvent mixing and short plastic straws. Children use these straws to create bubbles or balloons by squeezing a small amount of the mixture onto the end of the straw and then blowing through it. The air from the straw forms a bubble, making it a fun activity for children.
Previously, the country had also issued advisories against these balloon blowing kits sold via AliExpress.ca, eBay.ca and SHEIN.
