Priyanka Gandhi to be part of House panel on ‘One Nation, One Poll’: sources

New Delhi:

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Manish Tewari are in the list of Congress nominees for a joint parliamentary committee to study the ‘one nation, one election’ Constitution Amendment Bill that was tabled in Parliament yesterday, people said sources told NDTV on Wednesday afternoon.

Congress, the largest opposition party in Parliament, also nominated Randeep Surjewala and Sukhdeo Bhagat Singh to the commission, while Bengal’s ruling Trinamool party – an official Congress ally – nominated Saket Gokhale and Kalyan Banerjee on his side.

The bill proposes amendments to five articles of the Constitution to allow simultaneous federal and state elections to be held, as a first step in the “one nation, one vote” electoral model advocated by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

Presented by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal in the Lok Sabha, it sparked hours of bitter arguments, debates and protests before the opposition forced a division vote – unusual at this stage of a bill of law – for Parliament to formally accept the bill.

This first obstacle was overcome easily; 269 MPs voted in favor of the proposed bill while 198 opposed it. The Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill was then referred to a joint committee.
