Opposition no-confidence motion against Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar rejected

New Delhi:

The no-confidence motion moved by the Opposition against Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar was rejected by the Deputy Speaker on Thursday on the grounds that 14 days’ notice was not given and Mr. Dhankhar was spelled incorrectly.

Vice President Harivansh noted that the motion was moved to create a narrative against the person occupying the second highest constitutional office in the country, sources said. He pointed out that a joint press conference was also held to create a narrative against the vice president, they added.

Stating the reasons for the rejection, Mr. Harivansh said 14 days’ notice, mandatory for moving such a motion, was not given. Mr. Dhankhar’s name, he said, was also spelled incorrectly. However, one protocol that was correctly followed was to have 60 MPs sign the motion when it was presented last week.

This is the first time in the history of the Rajya Sabha that a motion to impeach the President has been moved. The INDIA bloc alleged that Mr. Dhankhar acted in a partisan manner and this was exacerbated during this winter session of Parliament, which was marked by repeated clashes between the opposition and the ruling party.

The Congress was left furious after BJP MPs were allowed to record speeches on alleged links between Sonia Gandhi and billionaire George Soros by Mr Dhankhar, who had rejected earlier notices to discuss the issue. The motion of censure was tabled shortly afterwards.

The motion, submitted under Article 67(B) of the Constitution, was also supported by the Samajwadi Party, the Trinamool Congress and the AAP, which have been at loggerheads with the Congress on several occasions during this parliamentary session.

The 14-day rule is mentioned in the article, which states that a “vice president may be removed from office by a resolution of the Council of States adopted by a majority of all then members of the Council and accepted by the House “. of the people; but no resolution for the purposes of this clause shall be proposed unless at least fourteen days’ notice has been given of the intention to propose the resolution. “

Opposition parties, some of whom had already said they knew there were not enough of them to pass the no-confidence motion and that it was largely a symbolic move to register their protest against Mr. Dhankhar and get him to correct his alleged partisan approach. It will now be necessary to decide whether they wish to present a similar motion in the next parliamentary session. The current session will end on Friday.

‘Penalty’

After the motion was moved, Mr. Dhankhar had said he was “personally pained” that the Congress was waging a “campaign” against him and asserted that as the son of a farmer, he would not show weakness.

“I am personally pained that the main opposition party has waged a blitzkrieg campaign against the president. They have the constitutional right to move a motion against me, but they are deviating from the constitutional provisions. Day after day, a “campaign is underway against the President. I studied what is happening in the public domain,” he said last week.

“Why can’t we follow the Constitution? You gave a notification, which we received, and you asked in your press conference what happened to the notification? Giving the impression that the President is sitting on the notification… Read the law, your motion will be presented in 14 days,” he added.
