Ceredigion announces bin collection dates over festive period

Ceredigion County Council has announced alternative dates for waste collection across the county over the festive period.

This year, with Christmas and New Year’s Day falling on Wednesdays, the council said it will “endeavour to arrange” waste collections usually scheduled on Wednesdays on the previous Saturday.

Thus, collections on Wednesday December 25, 2024 will be carried out on Saturday December 21, 2024 and collections on Wednesday January 1, 2025 will be carried out on Saturday December 28, 2024.

Waste collection will be carried out as planned on Thursday 26 December 2024 (Boxing Day).

All other waste collections are proceeding as planned.

Absorbent residual (black), food and hygiene waste will be prioritized for collection if resources are limited.

Collections of bulky household waste and green waste will be suspended from December 20, 2024 and will resume the week starting January 6, 2025.

A council spokesperson said: “A number of waste department staff are involved in providing the winter maintenance service.

“This can then have an immediate and larger impact on waste collection services.

“If weather events were to occur during the holiday period, this would affect waste collection and the approach taken to this will be reviewed in response to this, taking into account relevant considerations such as duration and availability of resources.

“Available resources will be deployed on a priority basis.

“This generally involves focusing on residual (black bags), food and absorbent hygiene (AHP) collections. Weekly collections of recycling bags (transparent) allow them to be recovered quickly. Glass is easier to store and there are other opportunities. to dispose of them in community glass roofs and in the Town Hall’s household waste disposal centers.”

All recycling centers are closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

On other public holidays, including Boxing Day, they will be open between 10am and 3pm.

In the case of Rhydeinon, Llanarth, this only applies if the public holiday falls on a day when it would normally be open.

Household recycling centers at Cilmaenllwyd in Cardigan, Glanyrafon in Aberystwyth and Lampeter are open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 3pm Saturday and Sunday. Rhydeinon, Llanarth is open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm.

Cllr Keith Henson, Ceredigion cabinet member for roads, environmental services and carbon management, said: “Our operational teams work throughout the year in all weather conditions and, as such, they are highly valued by the communities of which they are a part and that they serve. I would like to sincerely thank them for all their efforts. Waste collections during the festive period may be disrupted for various reasons. We will seek to deliver the services advertised, provide regular updates and recover as quickly as possible if services are affected.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our customers for their continued support and positive engagement. This means that Ceredigion is among the best performing local recycling authorities in Wales and waste that we are unable to recycle is processed through an energy-for-waste process. This is a great example of Caru Ceredigion’s work with the Council and our communities working together to deal with our waste in the most environmentally and financially efficient way possible. Thank you very much everyone.
