The story of Home Alone may not be as far-fetched as first thought: a quarter of travelers had to rush at the last minute to catch a flight.

Just like the McAllister family’s frantic journey to catch a festive flight in the iconic 1990 film, which those surveyed deemed the best Christmas movie of all, 18 percent also felt the intense stress of being late at the airport.

According to a survey of 2,000 adults who have flown, 13 percent have also missed a morning alarm before a trip – or hit the snooze button, which contributed to the family’s departure, son Kevin, played by Macauley Culkin, Home Alone.

Medications, boarding passes and even passports are some of the essential items left at home.

Other commonly forgotten items include travel adapters, sunglasses and toiletries, with 22% of respondents admitting that lack of sleep plays a big role in forgetting them.

When traveling for the holidays, 16 percent forgot Christmas gifts and 14 percent didn’t wrap cards.

And 30 percent even lost something at the airport, according to OnePoll data.

One in three travelers admit to not knowing how to pack their suitcase effectively.

But 39 percent didn’t know that some popular party items are not allowed through airport security, such as wrapped gifts, jams, chutneys and snow globes.

To avoid leaving anything behind, London Luton Airport is offering a limited number of alarm clocks for sleeping travelers, as well as free, often forgotten travel essentials at airport information desks for a limited period in December.

Complementary toiletries available include toothbrushes and combs, as well as sleep masks and wireless phone chargers.

Clare Armstrong, head of customer experience at the airport, who has also published a series of tips for festive travel, said: “Christmas comes with extra pressures – and extra things to remember – which means that travelers are more likely to forget things.

“We hope our campaign will provide a simple, friendly reminder to passengers on how to plan ahead, what to pack and, of course, set that all-important alarm early in the morning.”
