Rise in respiratory illnesses threatens to overwhelm Donegal’s health service this Christmas

Concern is growing among Donegal health service chiefs over rising cases of flu and respiratory illnesses in the run-up to Christmas.

Local health departments have reported being under increased pressure with influenza, RSV and Covid-19 circulating in communities.

HSE Health Manager for Donegal, Dermot Monaghan, said health services, both in hospitals and in primary and community care settings, are preparing for another significant increase in patient numbers.

Dermot said, “Over the past week, more than 600 people nationwide have been hospitalized due to COVID, flu and RSV. When this is added to the usual demands placed on health services, it places significant pressure on the public and health staff.

“We are asking our local communities in Donegal to consider all healthcare options if you or your family are unwell. Depending on your condition, there are several treatment options available to you, including out-of-hours GPs and pharmacies. Being prepared and knowing where to go means you will receive treatment more quickly and reduce pressure on the healthcare system.

“As always, people who need emergency care are encouraged to go to the emergency department, where they will be given priority. Patients who present to the emergency department for routine, non-urgent treatment may experience long wait times as we treat our sickest patients first.

Dr Áine Mc Namara, Director of Public Health at HSE West North West, said: “In total, almost 2,000 cases of COVID-19, RSV and influenza have been reported nationally over the past year. from last week. During the same week, emergency departments across the country experienced a significant increase in the number of people presenting to emergency rooms with COVID-19, influenza and RSV.

“We expect this trend to continue, but there is still time to get vaccinated. Every eligible person in Donegal should get their winter vaccination before Christmas to protect themselves, their family and friends from the worst impacts of flu and COVID-19.

Dr Mc Namara concluded: “It’s really important that we protect vulnerable people from the risk of infection, so don’t let your family members travel to a hospital, care home or other care setting health if you are not feeling well. I know it’s difficult this time of year because we all want to visit our loved ones, but if you are experiencing symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, cough or cold, I urge you to postpone your visit until ‘at 48 hours after the disappearance of symptoms. »
