Superman trailer shows glimpse of superhero dog Krypto and Lex Luthor – The Irish News

The first trailer for the highly anticipated James Gunn-directed Superman has been released, teasing superhero dog Krypto and Lex Luthor in the film.

Starring Pearl and Twisters actor David Corenswet in the dual role of Clark Kent and the Kryptonian’s alter ego, Man of Steel, opposite The Great and X-Men film series star Nicholas Hoult in the role of his enemy Lex Luthor, the teaser was released on Thursday.

The trailer begins with a fallen Superman, bloodied and struggling to get up from the ice, until he whistles to his dog Krypto, who comes to his aid, as Corenswet says: “Take me home “.

It shows Hoult as the gun-wielding CEO of LuthorCorp as well as several DC superheroes, including Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced). ) making grand entrances.

Marvelous Mrs. Maisel actress Rachel Brosnahan also appears as Lois Lane, with their romantic relationship teased in the trailer as they stare at each other in the offices of the Daily Planet newspaper, then kiss.

The two-minute, 35-second clip – which has limited dialogue – also shows a child calling out to Superman in the desert and the Man of Steel being bombarded by an angry mob.

Gunn, famous for the Marvel Guardians Of The Galaxy film series and the DC Comics film The Suicide Squad, said working on most films can be a “difficult process” but that “this one was remarkably smooth.” .

He added: “I think this trailer was actually a lot more difficult than the movie, getting the trailer to the place where I felt like it accurately represented what the movie was, (it was) difficult.”

Gunn also explained that he hopes the teaser will be “upbeat” and bring out “the essence of Superman.”

“I think taking on Superman, for me, was paradoxical… because you want to do something totally new, and yet you want to do something traditional,” he added.

He also said he thought the relationship between Lois and Clark on-screen in the new film was “unlike anything we’ve ever seen” before in depictions of Superman.

Speaking about working with British actor Hoult and playing the evil genius Luthor, Gunn said: “He (Luthor) is intimidating. He’s a badass but… he’s not without reasons for what he does, and I think Nick is just a fantastic actor to work with, and I loved working with him.

He also explained that Superman presents a bigger challenge than the Guardians of the Galaxy films, where the characters aren’t as famous.

“Superman is one of the most popular and famous characters in the world, and everyone has their own idea of what he should look like, what his costume should look like, what his morals should be, what his power is” , Gunn said. said.

He said making it “real and also authentic” was trial and error and involved working with costume designer Julianna Makovsky and visual effects to give the impression of the Silver Age of comics, but d ‘a more “anchored way that we have not seen them”. before (and that) is what makes the film unique.”

However, Gunn said it wasn’t a “completely” return to the Silver Age of comics, a period in the 1950s and 1970s where Superman solidified his place in the imagination of comics. readers and where the first film with Christopher Reeve was released, because the plot is about looking at Superman as “an individual and what his personal obstacles are.”

He also said he hoped “Superman would unify us a little bit” as the internet has become more “polarizing.”

“I think things have become really polarizing, (but) my life is not that,” he added.

“I’m not the type to believe that you should exclude someone because their politics are different from life. and I think at the end of the day, most of us try to do the best we can, and most of us make the best choices we can for ourselves and try to do things with compassion.

“And I know that’s hard to believe in this day and age where everything is so black and white on the Internet in terms of what’s good and what’s bad, and what choices are good and what choices are bad, what vote is good, what choices is bad.”

Superman will be released in the UK on July 11, 2025 by Warner Bros. Pictures.
