Three people arrested in western P.E.I. after police seize suspected meth and cocaine

Police say they seized 1.5 kilograms of what is believed to be methamphetamine and 40 grams of suspected cocaine at a residence in Anglo Tignish in western Prince Edward Island, as well as cash, weapons and a vehicle.

Three people were arrested and charged Wednesday, said Cpl. Gavin Moore. They were due to appear in court for a bail hearing on Thursday morning.

“Kilogram seizures in Prince Edward Island don’t happen every day,” Moore said. “This is a very significant seizure that represents a very, very large number of doses that have been taken off the street.”

Moore said 1.5 kilograms of meth could represent up to 15,000 doses of the drug.

“This is a very significant seizure that represents a very, very large number of doses that have been taken off the street,” said Cpl. Gavin Moore. (Tony Davis/CBC)

“As you can imagine, that’s a lot of drugs. That’s a lot of people affected in a very negative way by a very toxic substance,” he said.

This is the second seizure of a kilogram of methamphetamine in Prince Edward Island since August of this year, Moore said.

That could indicate the size and quantity of some of these dangerous drugs coming to P.E.I., he said.

The search was conducted by the Prince District Joint Operations Drug Unit, with assistance from the Prince District RCMP, the RCMP Provincial General Investigation Section, the RCMP Major Crime Unit, RCMP dog service and the Summerside Police Department’s Major Crime Unit.

We hope that the seizure of this quantity of drugs will have an impact on the availability here on Prince Edward Island.— Cpl. Gavin Moore

Although Moore said the substances police seized fit the characteristics of methamphetamine and cocaine, police are using the term “suspect” until they get results from a drug testing lab.

“We hope that the seizure of this quantity of drugs will have an impact on the availability here on Prince Edward Island,” Moore said.

“It is these efforts that also help signal to drug trafficking actors that they will be held accountable for their actions.”
