My house is filled with endless gadgets. I have a talking trash can, an artsy TV that changes backgrounds when I walk past it, and a Dyson robot that wanders around looking for dirt. When guests come, I constantly answer questions:What is this? And this? What does it do? But what I have the most questions about is my group of night lights. I tested this set for the first time in 2022, and despite two years of rotating between new products to test, they stuck around. I’ve actually purchased a lot more Casper night lights since my first purchase.

The beauty of the lamp lies in its simple and seamless design. It’s a pleasant round shape, about two inches in diameter, and you barely notice it’s there. I plug one into an outlet and mentally it fades into the background. The sensor makes it even more discreet. Of course, during the day the light never turns on. But at night, when you walk past, it lights up when you’re just the right distance. Never too early, never too late. It’s one of those technological success stories that works so perfectly you don’t notice it. It’s just part of the house. On the contrary, when it’s not there, you notice it.

I have one in every room in my house. In the kitchen, he guides me when I need a little light to have a glass of water in the middle of the night. I have one in the bathroom, so I don’t get stuck in a dark room or need to turn on the harsh overhead light that keeps my brain from going back to sleep. I have one in the hallway to help me get from the kitchen to the bathroom. Better yet, I have one in my son’s room. I don’t want a constant glow in his room while he sleeps, but if he wakes up I can come in and see him without disturbing any of us.

I never imagined I could enjoy something as simple as writing a story about it, but it’s truly one of my non-negotiables. Every time we have someone over for dinner, they notice the lights softly turning on as they walk down the hallway to the bathroom, and like clockwork, I get a text the next day: “Thanks for dinner! What were these night lights? So here’s my duty to everyone living without them: Each light costs $16 on Amazon: grab a few.
