Holt neighbors call for intersection safety improvements

Alyson Piper, who works nearby and passes by daily, said, “It’s a busy road, and not everyone pays attention to it.”
Piper says she witnessed an accident last Friday.

“A car hit a pole, almost against the building. There was just a lot of commotion and stuff on the ground,” she said.

Neighbors believe the problem could be due to an inconsistency in traffic lights, particularly at the turn arrow.

“One time it’s a flashing red light; the next time it’s solid,” said neighbor Sue Domzalski.

Drivers turning from Holt Rd. onto Cedar St. say the turn arrow alternates between flashing yellow, flashing red and solid green.

“I’ve seen people run red lights and I’ve seen accidents caused by changing lights too quickly,” Domzalski said.

To investigate further, I timed the green arrows at the intersection. The green arrow in one direction only lasted 9 seconds, while the arrow in another direction lasted 21 seconds.

“They don’t give you enough time to get through it,” Piper remarked.

Neighbors think making lighting cycles more consistent could help prevent accidents.

“Be aware of the lights, your surroundings and all other cars,” Domzalski said.

I contacted the Ingham County Highway Department, which oversees traffic signals, but did not receive a response prior to broadcast.

For now, residents are urging drivers to use extra caution when using this intersection.
