Residents of Pirojpur town have demanded authorities to search the Pirojpur Government High School pond again, 11 years after it was filled in by the local authorities.

Led by Anal Chandra Das, the then deputy commissioner of Pirojpur district, the century-old pond was filled in to expand the school playground to accommodate a space to hold the rally of the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in 2013, ignoring protests from local residents.

After the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, former and current students of the school requested the authorities concerned to dig the pond again.

Tarik Rana Chowdhury, a former student of the school, sent an application in this regard to the Principal Secretary, Secondary and Higher Education Division, Ministry of Education through Mohammad Ashraful Alam Khan, outgoing DC from Pirojpur.

“After the devastating cyclone Sidr that hit the southern districts in 2007, Pirojpur town experienced an acute drinking water crisis as damage to power lines led to suspension of water supply to the city ​​for about two weeks The pond served to alleviate the suffering of the local population as it became the only source of drinking water during this period, as most of the ponds in the city were filled up,” said Tarik. .

“In addition, the pond was the main source of water for the firefighters during any fire in the city. For the well-being of the city’s residents, it is necessary to dig the pond again. We are waiting for government to take our request into account.” he added.

When contacted, DC Ashraful Alam Khan said the request had been forwarded to the Principal Secretary, Secondary and Higher Education Division and action would be taken in this regard as per the instructions of higher authorities.
