Crikey! “Slack Sundays” really pull out all the stops! – Brighton and Hove News

Earlier this month we attended the inaugural ceremony ‘Soft Sunday’ live musical event organized at the Daltons venue on Brighton beach by Slack City Radio’s “Vince and Jo have a radio show”. There were a trio of good quality acts on offer that evening, namely The thieves, Bacci pouch, And Fishy baby and the entry fee was only £3.

This afternoon, the second part of ‘Soft Sunday’ has been announced, and the date on your calendar is February 2, 2025, and oh my word, they sure pulled out all the stops this time! If you are a fan of Adam & The Ants, then you seriously need to keep reading….

OK to begin with, they only went to secure the services of the one and only David Barbarossa who was the Adam and the ants drummer for their “Dirk wears White Sox” debut album, and was instrumental in creating a highly influential and innovative tribal drumming style. Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren sweet-talked him into leaving “The Ants” and forming Bow Wow Wow with guitarist Matthew Ashman and bassist Leigh Gorman then they recruited Annabella Lwin. Bow Wow Wow’s first single, ‘C·30 C·60 C·90 Go ahead!’, for which Barbarossa shared writing credit with McLaren, Ashman and Gorman, has the distinction of being the world’s first ever cassette single!

After that, Barbarossa switched to drums for Beats Internationalwhich featured Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim), then Barbarossa teamed up with Flowered Up keyboardist Tim Dorney, Andy Todd, guitarist Johnny Male and Nigerian-born singer Saffron to form Republica. Their first album “Republic” was released in July 1996 and reached number 4 in the UK charts. The Bachelor “Ready to go” peaked at number 13 on the UK Singles Chart, and “Drop Dead Wonderful” peaked at number 7.

Third house

Barbarossa now has a brand new company called Third house, which is an alliance between him and Umair “Spider” Chaudhry, known for his work in Silent Weapon and Walls Of Freedom. Last month, the duo released their debut EP titled “Inside, outside” – Find out HERE.

Not only will “Slack Sunday” feature Adam & The Ants drummer from 1977-1980, David Barbarossa, with his Third House project, but also Will Crewdson who is known for his guitar work with Adam Antas well as The Selecter, Johnette Napolitano, Gaye Bykers On Acid, Rachel Stamp and Flesh for Lulu.

Little respect

Will Crewdson also has a new business in the works and it’s called Little respect and it’s a solo whirlwind of pure, unadulterated, guitar-fueled energy. Will brings all his experience back into this mind-blowing apocalyptic amalgam of epic soundtrack proportions. He skillfully fuses the pioneering early electronic flavors of Fad Gadget, Cabaret Voltaire and Nitzer Ebb with the classic guitar tones of Duane Eddy and Link Wray, adding a touch of post-punk energy and attitude to wrap it all up in a bloodstained style. bow.

The Scant Regard 2023 EP titled “Everything is better than everything else” can be located HERE. This might just be Will’s most eclectic offering yet. It also features a few guests alongside the entirely solo tracks. “On the warpath” is a crazy industro-funk workout with Mary Byker (Gaye Bykers On Acid, Pop Will Eat Itself, Apollo 440) on lead vocals. “Roll alone” Who Came to Will in a Dream incorporates the dulcet tones of Maggie K De Monde (Scarlet Fantastic) on backing vocals.

Other highlights include the opening dystopian nightmare of “When the door slams”, the closest, melancholy but paranoid “I will give your love” plus some classic Scant instruments in “Difficult access” And “Last attempt”. The electro-pop joy of “I can’t fight forever” should also be mentioned.

This year, Will Crewdson followed “Everything is better than everything else” with “I was a punk before you were a punk” single (January 2024), “I feel love” single (February 2024), “Against your better judgment” 4-track EP (July 2024) and “That’s my name.” single (September 2024). Check out his releases HERE.

The bones ate Arfa

The third and final act of the month of February ‘Soft Sunday’ will be none other than that of Brighton The bones ate Arfa who follow in the divine footsteps of Queens of the Stone Age, Gorillaz, TySegall and Them Crooked Vultures. Their first single ‘Asbestos’ roots the band in their desert garage rock sound while bringing in influences from 90s industrial metal and psychedelic punk. In August, they dropped their 6 titles “The Akimbo people” PE. Check out their releases on their Bandcamp page HERE.

Tickets for the new ‘Slack Sunday’ event, taking place at Daltons on February 2 and featuring Third House, Scant Regard and Bones Ate Arfa are priced at just £3:00 and are on sale now from HERE.
