Amherst author self-publishes children’s book ‘Biscuits’

Alex Tuggle, author of “Biscuits,” created a children’s book based on his grandmother’s homemade cookie recipe.

Tuggle’s grandmother was Linda Doubikin.

“This is my grandmother’s original recipe that she used with her kids to make cookies,” Tuggle said. “He’s talking about me going to her house on the weekend and making this recipe with her.”

Tuggle said his goal was for the book to be part of a series he created, “The Bits and Bops of a Boy Named Bobby.”

The main character is named after Tuggle’s late grandfather, Bobby Doubikin.

“Once my grandfather passed away in 2004, it was a tough year for me,” Tuggle said. “Everything I have done since then has been in his honor.”

Tuggle owns BD Landscape and Construction, named after his grandfather.

He said he wanted to write a children’s book to help the younger generation.

“With this book, I was trying to teach kids more about cooking, supporting themselves and being self-reliant,” Tuggle said.

The book goes through every step of making Linda Doubikin’s cookie recipe, he said.

At the end, young readers are asked questions such as who did you make your cookie with and what your favorite cookie recipe is, Tuggle said.

“Nowadays, especially with inflation, it’s very difficult to save money,” he said. “I wanted to highlight ways to use old-fashioned techniques and recipes to save money.”

Tuggle published 500 copies of the book.

He said he worked with Minuteman Press in Amherst to print the copies.

Tuggle said he also worked with Lorain County illustrator Sandy Boone.

“I wanted to keep it local to support my neighbors and keep money in the county,” he said.
