“Don’t knock it until you try it”

Move over, hot chocolate and eggnog – it seems steamed Dr Pepper is the new cold weather drink of choice.

In a video posted to Instagram, user Morgan Chomps started a new trend: Dr Pepper, most often eaten cold, reheated in a CrockPot and garnished with a squeeze of fresh lemon.

Morgan said that when his mother was in high school, hot Dr. Pepper was the hot drink of choice at concession stands. When her mother made her the drink, she immediately loved it.

The recipe, the user explains, requires just three things: a two-liter bottle of Dr Pepper, a fresh lemon, and a slow cooker.

“It’s soda on a whole new level,” she said.

To prepare the drink, empty the bottle of Dr Pepper into a slow cooker. Morgan put her stove on high for about two hours, she said, until the liquid was hot — but not boiling or simmering.

In the meantime, she told me to cut the lemon into thin slices. They can be added to the drink or you can squeeze the juice directly into the liquid. Both methods will allow the flavors of the citrus and soda to “marinate together,” she said.

“The spices in Dr Pepper work really well as a hot drink, and the lemon brings it all home,” she said. “Don’t knock it until you try it.”

The recipe quickly went viral and users across social media platforms tried the drink. Many were surprised that the drink was good, noting that the lemon was a great addition and that the hot Dr Pepper seemed to have more flavor than the traditional cold version.

The Dr Pepper Museum served a similar drink, a TikTok of their page showed. Their recipe involves making the soda from scratch with their “secret syrup” and specifically heating the drink to 180 degrees.

Hot Dr Pepper began as a marketing tactic in 1958 to maintain sales during the colder months, the museum confirmed in the comments section of the video.
