Ruben Amorim says Man United were ‘nervous’ during 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth

Ruben Amorim said Manchester United “must suffer again” but will continue to try to win “until the end” after a disappointing 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth.

The Cherries went out of their way to add to the Portuguese manager’s misery, inflicting two defeats in a week and ending the positivity of last weekend’s thrilling Manchester derby victory.

Dean Huijsen gave the visitors the lead before half-time as United fell to another free-kick. Justin Kluivert converted from the spot just after the hour mark, and two minutes later, Antoine Semenyo scored a third to put the match beyond doubt.

Amorim identified his team’s nerves as a problem, telling Sky Sports after the match: “This game was tough for us. We suffered again from set pieces and we were a little nervous, I felt it in the stadium.

“The penalty and another goal are really tough here. We tried to score a few goals but it was a difficult game so let’s move on.

United’s head coach saw some positives, with his team taking 23 shots during the match but unable to convert a single one. “If you look at the game, we didn’t concede anything before the first goal, we had opportunities,” he said.

“If we manage to score the first goal, then the game should be different. We want to score but we are too nervous. We must fight against this.

Bournemouth’s quick second-half goals were a blow United were unable to recover from, and Amorim admitted it was a crucial moment in the match.

“After the penalty we need to control the match better because we know this situation is really difficult,” he said. “We need to control this moment better.”

United head into Christmas in the bottom half of the table and face matches against a resurgent Wolverhampton Wanderers and an in-form Newcastle United before a trip to Anfield in the new year.

Amorim issued a rallying cry to fans and reiterated that there are no shortcuts to get the club back to the top. “We have to focus on the work and not on how it feels in the stadium,” he said.

“It’s the only way I know to concentrate my players. We still have to suffer but we will try to win. We will do it until the end.
