The Barelli bench issued notice to Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his ‘caste census’ and remarks on economic survey in the Lok Sabha elections held this year . The notice orders the LoP to appear in court on January 7.

Pankaj Pathak, petitioner in the case, said, “We felt that the statement made by Rahul Gandhi during the elections on caste census is like an attempt to start a civil war in the country… We had first filed a complaint against him in The MP-MLA court was dismissed. After that we went to the district court, our appeal was accepted and a notice was issued to Rahul Gandhi… The date January 7 is given in the notice…”

Reacting to the notice, Congress leader and former MP Udit Raj called it a “wasteful notice” and said judges should be removed from office. He said: “There is nothing to discuss on this issue… This is a wasteful notice… The judges should be removed from office…”

What did Gandhi say?

Gandhi notably raised his voice defending “Jitni Aabadi, Utna Haq”. At an election rally, he had said: “First of all, we will conduct a caste census… to know the exact population and status of backward castes, SCs, STs, minorities and others castes. After that, the financial and institutional investigation will be carried out. Thereafter, we will take up the historic mission of distributing India’s wealth, jobs and other welfare programs to these sections based on their population. »

His statement became a point of controversy during the election campaign with several parties, including the BJP, criticizing him over the claim.
