FIR filed against accused who tried to attack BJP MLC Ravi

Bengaluru, December 23 (IANS): The Karnataka Police have filed an FIR against the accused who attempted to attack BJP MLC CT Ravi in the corridors of Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belagavi, police said on Monday.

The accused had attempted to attack CT Ravi following an alleged objectionable statement against Minister of State for Women and Child Welfare Lakshmi Hebbalkar. The incident took place on December 19 in Belagavi Suvarna Vidhana Soudha.

The complaint was registered in this regard with Hirebagewadi police station in Belagavi by CT Ravi. However, the police had registered it as a miscellaneous case.

BJP MLC DS Arun and Prof SV Sankanura had filed a complaint with Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti, alleging attack on CT Ravi by supporters of minister Laxmi Hebbalkar.

BJP MLC Kishore Kumar Puttur, who was present at the time of the attack, had also filed a separate complaint with Speaker Horatti in this regard.

Ravi had repeatedly claimed that his complaint regarding the attack on him was never registered by the police.

Sources confirmed that the complaint was registered under BNS sections 189(2) (unlawful assembly is a group of five or more people who have a common purpose to commit an illegal act), 191(2) (riots) and 190 (unlawful assembly with the pursuit of a common object), 126(2) (unjustified coercion), 352 (intentionally insulting another to provoke a violation of the peace or another offense), 351(2) (criminal intimidation) against the accused.

Speaking to IANS, BJP MLC Kishore Kumar Puttur said he had lodged a complaint in this regard with the Council Chairman and was yet to be informed about the progress.

“The attackers arrested by the police in the morning were seen speaking to television channels in the evening. The BJP would never have allowed such an incident to happen if it was in power. I doubt any police action under the Congress government as it will be in favor of the ruling government,” MLC Puttur said.

“The attackers directly threatened me with death and challenged me to face the consequences,” he said.

Chaos and drama unfolded last Thursday when, during a heated debate in the Legislative Council, CT Ravi allegedly called Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi a “drug addict”.

Objecting to these remarks, Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar criticized Ravi and called him a “murderer”. In response, the BJP leader allegedly used derogatory remarks against the woman minister.

“Regarding the allegations, the President has given a decision. I have already conveyed this to the media and will not elaborate further… Our words are known to our conscience and to the Almighty,” Ravi had said.
