A WOMAN quit her job to travel the US in a truck with her husband and despite numerous arguments, the couple wouldn’t have it any other way.

Mila Horton, 29, grew up dreaming of traveling the world – but until she met her current husband, Jermaine, 31, she never considered doing it in a truck and riding his house.

She is now able to be a “passenger princess” since her husband travels nearly 800 km per day to deliver refrigerators.

In 2021, the two decided to store their belongings and abandon their house to turn the truck into their tiny home.

Mila, a content creator who documents their travels on TikToks, originally from Atlanta, GeorgiaUSA, said: “Trucking was not part of my plan – it was never a desire of mine.

“But I also never thought I’d be able to visit almost all 50 states in one year – so it’s a dream come true.

“We always make sure we get out and do things – we always told ourselves it wouldn’t stop us from having fun.

“A lot of people see us online and think our life is fake because it looks so fun – but it really is great.”

They went to every state except Vermont, New York, New York. HampshireMaine, Conn., Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

They decorated their truck’s small living space to make it cozy – with a rug, string lights, plants, wallpaper and personal photos – because that’s where they eat, sleep and relax. relax.

They use truck stops to shower and exercise before sleeping in the cabin on a built-in bed.

While Jermaine drives, Mila cooks for them, as they have a small kitchen area with an air fryer, electric skillet and instant pot on board.

The couple – who married in 2019 – spend every day together but say they still make time for dates and quality time.

Mila – a self-confessed “passenger princess” – said their unusual arrangement worked for them and the best part was “seeing the country with the love of my life”.

Jermaine works for a flexible company, so he can select the deliveries he makes, and the company allows a passenger to come – so Mila can stay on the road with him the whole time.

The couple has a double bed and a television in their cabin where they relax before bed each evening.

We always showered together, but there were days when I said, “Actually, I need my time off and I want my own shower today.”

Since they spend most of their days in very close quarters, Mila said at first they sometimes caused them to have “fights.”

But over time, they implemented an effective system to ensure the separation of spaces.

She said: “At first it was about petty little things, misunderstandings and arguments that went on for too long.

“But we realized we would need our own space. Sometimes I sit in the back while he drives listening to his music and podcasts.

“We always showered together, but there were days when I said ‘actually, I need my time off and I want my own shower today.’

“We learned to find time for ourselves, in order to respect each other’s limits.

“When you’re together 24/7, you need strong communication and mutual support. So we work through arguments together.”

Jermaine and Mila met while she was working at an airport as an electric cart driver in 2017 – while Jermaine was working locally – and they started dating in 2018.

They moved in together and then married in July 2019 – he worked 9-5 driving a truck around town on short-distance trips.

But both wanted to see more of the world, and in 2021 Jermaine suggested they clean up their house and live in a truck bed.

Mila agreed, so Jermaine purchased a Peterbilt 579 sleeper truck and in October 2021, they hit the road full time.

Jermaine works for a refrigerated freight shipping company and typically travels interstate, meaning each trip can take several days.

So the couple lives on the road, stopping at truck stops each evening to shower and exercise before sleeping in the truck.

Most roads are highways and secondary highways – long roads stretching for miles across the country.

Throughout their days, while Jermaine drives, Mila cooks for them – from pot roast to macaroni and cheese and quesadillas – in their small kitchen.

She said: “I look after the cooking and cleaning because Jermaine drives.

“I usually cook while he drives, so when he’s done for the day, the food is ready.

“It can be difficult because the truck is moving and it’s also very difficult to do the dishes while it’s moving – but now I’m in the rhythm.”

Mila – who documents their travels on TikTok @coupledbythemiles – added that a priority for the two of them was getting away from the truck to spend time together.

They “turn as many things into a date as possible” – like researching restaurants at their rest stops and planning outings when Jermaine has a day off.

Many people say trucking is no fun, but we make an effort to plan things, go to appointments, and get out of the truck.

Utah and California were their strong points in this regard – and had day trips including to the beach and to a theme park.

The couple said trucking won’t be their forever life and they plan to settle down, buy a house and start a family when they have saved enough.

But for now, they’re more than happy to be on the road together.

Mila said, “A lot of people say trucking is no fun, but we make an effort to plan things, go to appointments, and get out of the truck.

“Living this way has brought us closer than ever and we have learned a lot about each other.

“The best part is that I get to see the country with the love of my life.

“I see what my husband does every day and it has led me to develop a new respect for him and for all truckers.”

Jermaine added: “I love being able to travel – I’ve always wanted to, and driving a truck has allowed me to do that.

“When I found out Mila wanted to go on the road, it was incredible.

“It takes a lot of effort because it’s a smaller space, and at first there was trivial stuff because we were on top of each other.

“But you have to learn to adapt and respect each other’s space when you need it.

Is it legal to live in a van?

IF you’re looking to live in a van to save money or travel, you’ll be happy to know that there are no UK laws stopping you from doing so.

However, you must ensure that your vehicle has passed its MOT and is fully road legal.

There might also be restrictions on where you can park to sleep in your van.

For example, local authorities impose restrictions on certain streets or parking areas, and you could be fined if you spend the night there.

It can also be dangerous to stop in certain places, especially at night.
