Neighbor offers condolences to families after shooting kills two

MILWAUKEE — 38th Street and Nash Street were the scene of a double shooting that left two people dead. The anonymous victims were aged 24 and 42.

Police said the shooting happened shortly after 1:30 p.m. Monday.

Crime is not very common in the neighborhood according to Debra Gillispie, a neighbor.

“Yes, it’s shocking because I walk my dog at night, other people go out at night to walk their dogs,” Gillispie said.

Gillispie has lived in the neighborhood for a year.

While the details of the shooting remain to be discovered, Gillispie’s thoughts are with the families of the victims, who lost loved ones just days before Christmas.

“They’re in shock,” Gillispie said. “They received this information, they are in complete shock. It’s unbelievable and we just want you to know that we are here for you and we are truly sorry for your loss.”

Unfortunately, Gillispie knows the situation all too well. She lost her only son to gun violence just over 20 years ago.

Her own loss inspired her to create Mothers Against Gun Violence.

“I want these families to know that our thoughts are with you and your loss,” Gillispie said.

MPD says it continues to search for unknown suspects in this shooting. Meanwhile, Gillispie fights to stop the violence.

“My plea is that we can solve our problems without shooting each other,” Gillispie said. “Because once you kill someone, it’s permanent and you can’t take them back.”
