Narayanpet: Panic spread in Nandipahad village under Maddur mandal in the district after a leopard attacked a few goats last night and fled into the forests with one.

The incident occurred on Monday around 7 p.m., when the shepherds took the goats to pasture. Spotting the goats, the leopard suddenly surfaced and tried to attack a goat. While he managed to escape, the leopard attacked two kids and tried to drag them into the forests.

While doing so, farmers P Ramulu, B Raju and B Shantappa noticed the leopard. He left one child behind and fled with the other into the forests. The farmers claimed to have spotted two leopards.

However, forest officials said that despite their appeals to farmers and herdsmen not to venture near the forest boundaries, they are taking the livestock to pasture. Generally, leopards attack stray dogs, but with the presence of goats and other prey nearby, they tend to attack them, a forest official said.

Soon after learning about the incident from the villagers, a team of officials arrived at the village and scanned the entire area. A leopard’s pug marks were detected and, not taking any further chances, a cage was set up to trap the leopard overnight. On Tuesday, another cage will also be installed, he said.

Over the past four months, leopard movements have decreased in the region, but sightings have increased over the past two weeks. They generally do not attack humans and tend to move around late in the evening and at night, he added.
