Elon Musk says America will be ‘toast’ and the US dollar will be ‘worthless’ without quick action – what he means

America is undeniably an economic powerhouse, but Tesla CEO Elon Musk – the richest person in the United States and the world – is sounding the alarm about its financial future.

“The country is bankrupt. If we don’t act, the dollar won’t be worth anything,” Musk said during a recent appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast.

Elon Musk’s alarm focuses on the exploding US national debt, which currently stands at $36.17 trillion. Managing this colossal debt comes at a high price: the payment of interest alone constitutes a significant and growing pressure on public finances.

“Interest payments, which already make up 23% of all government revenue…will just pay interest for now, and that number keeps growing,” Musk explained. “So if we don’t do anything, the entire state budget will be earning interest – there won’t be any money for anything. No, there will be no money for Social Security, there will be no money for Medicare, nothing. This is where we are heading. This is what bankruptcy means.

The numbers paint a grim picture. In fiscal year 2024, interest on the U.S. federal debt totaled $1.126.5 trillion, while the federal government collected $4.92 trillion in revenue.

Musk stressed the urgency of the situation: “I look at the numbers here and I say if we don’t do something, America is toast.”

Whether America can technically go bankrupt is a complex question, because the federal government cannot file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization. Instead, Congress should decide whether to let the federal government default on its debt, otherwise it could continue borrowing as long as there is demand for government bonds from investors.

“Technically speaking, the government cannot go bankrupt because it only promised to remit a certain amount of dollars; he did not promise what the value of those dollars would be. Because the value of dollars has never been specified, the government can print enough of them to make dollars almost worthless. For the rest of us, the effect is the same as a government failure,” write the co-hosts of the “Words & Numbers” podcast.
