As 19 fire crews frantically tried to bring the Secretariat fire under control early today (December 26), Shoyanur Jaman Noyon was also doing its part.

Shoyanur, 24, was crossing the street with a garden hose on his shoulder. But a truck ran over him, said a colleague from Shoyanur, who requested anonymity.

He blames the police for his death, saying the surrounding streets are supposed to be closed in case of fire, but the police failed to close the streets in front of the Secretariat, leading to the death of the firefighter.

“I just lost a colleague in front of my eyes. Shoyanur was trying to connect a water pipe to a water pump located nearby, opposite the Secretariat,” another firefighter named Shahidul Sumon told the Business Standard.

“He was found lying in the street after being hit by a truck while crossing the road.”

Earlier, a fire gutted several floors of Building 7 of the Secretariat in the wee hours of Thursday.

“The first report of the fire that broke out in the secretariat came at 1:52 a.m. Several firefighting units arrived at the scene and started battling the flames at 1:54 a.m.,” said Talha Bin Jasim, head of the firefighters and civil defense media unit, at The Business Standard. at 3:45 a.m.

As the intensity of the fire intensified, at least 19 units were dispatched. Firefighters brought the flames under control around 8:05 a.m., Talha said later.

When asked about this, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Ramna zone Obaidur Rahman refused to comment.

Speaking to reporters outside the Secretariat in the morning, Director General (DG) of Fire Brigade Brigadier General Muhammad Jahed Kamal confirmed that a firefighter from Tejgaon fire station was killed in the exercise from his duties when he was hit by a truck on the road opposite. from the Osmani Memorial Auditorium located on the other side of the secretariat.

Shoyanur was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors on duty declared him dead on arrival. His body was kept in the morgue.

His namaz-e-janaza will take place at the fire headquarters near Bangabazar junction after Zuhr prayers.

A member of the 61st batch, Shoyanur had joined the fire service on October 2, 2020. He hails from Atpania village in Mithapukur upazila of Rangpur.

Although his main duty station was the Sylhet Fire Station at Bishwanath, he was attached to the Tejgaon Fire Station.

Being the only son of his parents, Shoyanur had an elder sister.
