“It’s a disaster waiting to happen.”

Living with neighbors can be difficult; especially if they don’t share the same values. A Reddit user felt this way when he took to the subreddit r/ApartmentLiving to air his grievances over a gas leak that filled the apartment complex with gas.

“Twice I had to call emergency because they left their gas stove on and it got to the point where my apartment stank of gas,” the OP wrote. “The new neighbor downstairs sat in a gas-filled apartment all day and didn’t alert anyone.”

Editors flocked to the comments section to express how dangerous this was for the OP. Not only can gas stoves deteriorate the air quality in the home, but they can also be very dangerous when confronted with other substances such as open flames.

Do you think gas stoves should be banned nationwide?

“This is truly a disaster waiting to happen,” one wrote.

“Call the gas company 100%,” another commenter wrote. “They can write a citation to the homeowner if there’s a gas leak that’s not repaired.”

It can be difficult to stick to healthy environmental change when neighbors or roommates don’t share the same values. Gas leaks or overuse of gas appliances can have a significant impact on the environment. Studies show that gas stoves account for a tenth of the country’s carbon pollution. At the same time, gas stoves are bad for your health. A study found that gas stoves cause one in eight cases of childhood asthma.

Some commenters had solutions.

“Also get a CO detector for your unit. They are not very expensive and you may be able to get one for free from the fire department depending on where you live,” another community member commented.

Other solutions found in The Cool Down articles suggest having “a hood over your stove or opening a window” to help mitigate pollution levels and improve air quality in the house. It is also recommended to try an air purifier to remove harmful pollutants from the home.
