A look back at some good neighbors in 2024

A look back at some good neighbors in 2024

LANSING, Mich. – My name is Bob Hoffman. Across Mid-Michigan, 2024 was a year where neighbors made a big difference. Thanks to Good Neighbors, we have shared dozens of inspiring stories, reminding us of the power of kindness.

A look back at some of these notable moments.

East Lansing residents Roger and Marilyn Grove celebrated a very special wedding anniversary in 2024.

“We’ve been married for 70 years,” Marilyn says. “And we’re working on our second 70. Maybe we’ll get there.”

Bob asks, “What is the secret to 70 years of marriage?” »

Marilyn responds quickly. “Well, I don’t know, it was very easy. He always gives in to me.

With a smile, Roger said, “I just do what I’m told.”

Marilyn responds: “70 years have gone by so quickly, and when you’re in love, it is. And we are still madly in love. RIGHT? You better tell the truth.

“Yes dear,” » Roger said with a smirk and a laugh.

From a love that has stood the test of time to a passion for history preserved for generations.

On the outskirts of Mason, tucked beneath a quaint house, lies a treasure that would make any history buff weak.

Jack Cook, a sprightly 87-year-old, maintains an astonishing collection of American presidential items.

“We bought this house because I wanted to turn this basement into a museum,” says Jack.

“I am interested in the office of the presidency. Because for me, 45 people have held this position. And they are quite fascinating.

Among the thousands of items Jack has collected are books written and autographed by several commanders in chief and a ballot box from the infamous 2000 election, hanging clothes and everything in between.

After 60 years of collecting, Jack has made the difficult decision to part ways.

“I think my kids would like one or two items, but they’re not interested in everything.”

From Jack’s dedication to preserving the past, we turn to a group in North Lansing who are creating a brighter present, where kindness, courage and strength transform lives every day.

In the heart of North Lansing, nestled within the Gier Community Center, you will find a group of angels.

Tracy Smith helps bring them all together.

“It’s a very spiritual and very uplifting experience to be here and to be surrounded by the love that we have here with the people that are here,” Tracy said.

They call themselves KCS Angels.

“KCS actually represents kindness, courage and strength,” Tracy explains.

KCS Angels began in 2016 as a social group for adults with disabilities. A big part of the group’s mission is to have fun!

And they are having fun… indeed.

From art classes to basketball games, the KCS Angels embrace the joy of every moment.

As we have seen, the power of kindness can take many forms: celebrating a lifetime of love, cherishing our history, making life more joyful, and growing something beautiful in our garden.
