Uttar Pradesh: Following the violence that broke out in Sambhal on November 24, the Uttar Pradesh Police is taking steps to beef up security and as part of these efforts, construction of a new police outpost is expected to begin on the land in front of Shahi Jama Masjid, officials said on Friday.

“The measurements for the new outpost have been completed,” Additional Superintendent of Police Shrish Chandra said.

However, he declined to reveal the proposed name for the outpost at this stage.

“The outpost is being established to enhance security in the area. Once completed, it will be manned 24 hours a day to ensure continuous police presence,” the officer said.

Four people were killed and several others, including members of the security forces, were injured in violence that erupted in the Kot Garvi area on November 24, when residents clashed with police during an investigation ordered by the court in the Shahi Jama mosque following a petition claiming that a Harihar temple once existed at the site.

Excavations of “Mrityu Kup” begin in Sambhal

The administration of this district of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday, December 26, began the renovation and excavation of the ancient “Mrityu Kup” (well of death) in Kot Purvi, located in the Sambhal Kotwali police station area. .

The initiative is part of a broader effort to identify and restore wells believed to be of great religious and spiritual significance. According to residents, the well was abandoned several years ago and filled with debris that will be cleared.

The well is not only a historical monument but also a sacred site where devotees believe they can achieve salvation by bathing, locals say. The well is deeply ingrained in the spiritual fabric of the region, with locals holding it in high esteem for its mythological significance.

“Thursday marks the start of excavations of the Mrityu Kup, a very ancient and revered site. The excavations are being carried out with the cooperation of Nagar Palika. The well is extremely popular and its renovation will further strengthen our faith. The district administration has brought a considerable support to ensure the development of this important cultural and religious monument,” said local councilor Gagan Varshney.

Sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) of Sambhal, Vandana Mishra, said that along with a team from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), she visited the Bhadrika Ashram Tirtha and Chaturmukh Kup at Hauz Bhadde Sarai.
