Bollywood filmmaker Hansal Mehta paid glowing tribute to former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh following his death on Thursday evening (December 26) at AIIMS, Delhi. Dr Manmohan Singh, revered as the architect of economic reforms in India, was 92 years old. Several celebrities from the film and television industry took to social media to express their grief and pay tribute to this elder statesman.
Hansal Mehta, known for directing ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’ – a film based on Dr Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister – posted an emotional note on his X account (formerly Twitter). Mehta admitted to having deep regret over his portrayal of the political figure. “The nation owes him an apology. More than anyone, I owe him one. Whatever the coercion or the intention, it is a regret that I will carry with a very heavy heart. Sorry, sir,” he said. he writes.
Reflecting on the distinguished career and dignified attitude of Dr Manmohan Singh, Mehta further praised him as a rare gentleman in Indian politics. “Apart from your achievements as an economist, finance minister and prime minister, you were an honorable man, a rare gentleman in a vocation dominated by thugs,” Mehta added.
The government has declared a state funeral for Dr Singh and there will be no official entertainment during the mourning period.
The demise of Dr. Manmohan Singh marks the end of an era, but his contributions to India’s growth and development will continue to inspire generations. As Hansal Mehta famously said, “You were an honorable man,” a sentiment shared by countless people across the country.
