The altercation took place between the group led by industrialist Mukesh Bansal, who claims to be the current MIA president, and another faction led by industrialist Baljit Singh, who also claims the same position.

Two factions of the Mohali Industries Association (MIA) clashed at the MIA office in Phase 7 on Friday over the post of president of the association. The confrontation took place in the presence of the police and degenerated into physical violence.

The altercation took place between the group led by industrialist Mukesh Bansal, who claims to be the current MIA president, and another faction led by industrialist Baljit Singh, who also claims the same position. Tensions flared when members of the Baljit Singh group allegedly prevented Bansal and his supporters from entering the premises. Allegations flew from both sides, with Bansal’s faction claiming assault, while the opposing group accused them of disrespecting a member’s turban, triggering the clash.

The ongoing leadership conflict had earlier prompted Bansal to approach the Mohali deputy commissioner seeking intervention. The matter was referred to the Mohali SDM, which issued a notice on Thursday advising the MIA to hold fresh elections.

The SDM notice highlighted that the executive committee’s mandate for 2024-2025 had not been properly extended, in violation of MIA regulations. “No executive committee exists today. The elections should be organized again within specific time frames to ensure the smooth functioning of the association,” the notice said.

The incident on Friday prompted a swift response from the authorities with ASP Jayant Puri and Station House Officer (SHO) Sukhbir Singh arriving at the spot to control the situation.

The police launched an investigation and ensured appropriate measures based on evidence.

Police also arrested an MIA member for damaging the phone of a journalist covering the incident.
