Andre Onana asked to ‘LEAVE’ Man Utd as club ‘targets Premier League goalkeeper for replacement’ – Man Utd

A former Manchester United goalkeeper has claimed that Andre Onana should ‘leave’ the club if ‘things don’t change’ by the end of the 2024/25 Premier League season.

Onana, 28, joined United from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023 for a fee of £47.2 million, according to BBC Sport.

Since becoming the club’s number one under Erik ten Hag’s tenure, he has shown brilliance but has been criticized for several errors, including conceding directly from a Matheus Cunha corner in the 2-0 defeat. 0 against the Wolves on Thursday.

In his 18 Premier League appearances this season, he has conceded 24 goals, but at times his case has not been helped by poor defensive performances from his teammates.

However, a former United player has claimed he could be ‘better suited’ in another European league.

Massimo Taibi, 54, played for the Red Devils between 1999 and 2000. But his time at United did not go as planned, when he made an error against Liverpool on his debut before dropping out another against Southampton in September 1999.

He left for Italian club Reggina in 2000 and then played for Atalanta, Turin and Ascoli before retiring in 2009.

Now he has given his opinion on the current situation Onana finds herself in.

“I would go straight to the point and say to him: ‘André, you are one of the best goalkeepers in Europe, but in the Premier League you are underperforming,’ he told The Sun.

“Block out the criticism, do some soul-searching, hit reset and start again.” And if things don’t change by June, move on.

“I think subconsciously the environment in America is not ideal for him and when a marriage shows cracks there is no point in continuing.

“Sometimes things don’t work out in a team, and it’s better to break up, which wouldn’t be a failure.

“For me he is a strong goalkeeper who finds himself in a situation where he cannot show his skills because he is not cut out for the English game.”

He then explained how the Cameroonian’s “ability to play with the ball” would allow him “to excel in Italy or France”.

Of course, it’s unclear whether Onana would be ready to leave the club after just a season and a half at Old Trafford. The goalkeeper’s current contract with United is set to end in June 2028.

However, the Daily Star reports that “the search for a top goalkeeper is already underway.”

The outlet claims that Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen, 22, is the club’s ‘favourite’ and, given his contract is set for a further three years, could cost around £30million.

But a potential transfer is unlikely to be finalized in the January window, meaning Ruben Amorim will have to persist with Onana for now.
