Lawyer issues legal notice to government to stop ‘unnecessary’ imports from India

A Supreme Court lawyer yesterday issued a legal notice to the government asking it to take necessary steps to stop imports of unnecessary products from India.

Advocate Md Mahmudul Hasan sent the legal notice to the secretaries of the commerce and home ministries; the president of the National Revenue Council; and the Chief Controller of Imports and Exports to take action in seven days.

In the legal notice, the lawyer said that imports of unnecessary products from India violate the theory of “comparative advantage” in international trade theory, harm the economy of Bangladesh and also create obstacles to local industries in Bangladesh.

“The theory of “comparative advantage” in the context of imports refers to the principle that a country chooses to import goods that it can produce locally but at a higher opportunity cost than other countries. By focusing its resources on industries where it has a comparative advantage and importing goods that others can produce more efficiently, the country maximizes resource allocation and economic efficiency. This strategy promotes cost reduction, improves trade relations and enables access to a wider range of goods and services, thereby contributing to economic growth and development. ” he said in the legal notice.

The lawyer listed in the legal notice has asked the authorities to take necessary legal action against bogus importers from Bangladesh who are agents of Indian exporters and are “endeavoring to sell unnecessary Indian products in Bangladesh”.

In the legal notice, Mahmudul said he would file an application in the High Court for necessary directions if the recipients of the notice fail to take action in line with his demands mentioned in the notice.
