Man posing as IAS officer detained in Calangute | Goa News

Calangute: A fake IAS officer who allegedly tried to blackmail a nightclub owner in Tito’s lane, next to two shacks in Baga, was arrested by the Calangute police on Sunday.
Police said the accused Manoj Kumar, 31, a native of Madhya Pradesh, arrived in Goa on December 5. He hired a taxi and went to Calangute, where he booked a room at a resort in Umtawaddo, near the beach.
He told the taxi driver that he was an IAS officer working in Odisha and would soon be transferred to Goa. After staying for a few days in Calangute, the accused left Goa for personal reasons. On December 20, he returned to Goa and again contacted the same taxi driver.
On December 26, around 1:20 p.m., he visited the Calangute parking lot in a taxi, showed an IAS officer’s identity card and asked the staff stationed there to accompany him so that he could carry out an inspection in the Calangute area. The staff accompanied him, believing him to be an IAS officer, and they went to Baga beach where he visited two shacks and threatened to shut down their activities.
“Furthermore, he visited important clubs in Tito’s alley in Baga and asked them to close the clubs otherwise he would cause trouble for them. He then dropped the staff off at their respective places and returned to his hotel. He used to tell everyone that he was an IAS officer and was about to be transferred to Goa for other duties,” police said.
After someone informed the police about his suspicious behavior, it was found that he was not an IAS officer but was posing as one. He was found and arrested.
Police said the accused allegedly “dishonestly impersonated an IAS officer working in Odisha and dissuaded a public servant from discharging his lawful duties”. Furthermore, the accused intentionally tried to scare the businessmen by threatening to charge them with an offense punishable by death.
