Milwaukee parking ticket scam; Alderman warns against “fake” text messages

MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee Alderman Lamont Westmoreland’s office is warning residents about a text message that appears to be from the city.

A news release says people are receiving a text message that appears to be from the city of Milwaukee stating that the recipient needs to pay an overdue parking ticket and click to pay to avoid late fees. Officials say anyone clicking on the link could open their phone/data to malware or ransomware. They therefore strongly urge anyone receiving a text message like this to delete or ignore it.

Additionally, anyone who provided their debit or credit card information is urged to contact their financial institution immediately and report what happened, so their accounts can be protected.
