Confrontation in Canaan ends with arrest

CAANAN — A standoff on South Sibley Road Monday morning ended with an arrest in the afternoon, officials said.

The Somerset County Sheriff’s Office arrested Edward Fowler, 62, after he allegedly threatened his neighbor with a gun, said Somerset County Chief Deputy Michael Mitchell.

Mitchell said the neighbor reported the incident at 8:46 a.m. Monday and when officers arrived at Fowler’s residence at 24 South Sibley Road, he did not answer the door.

Because Fowler was suspected of possessing a gun, Mitchell said, out of an abundance of caution, law enforcement called the Maine State Police Tactical Team and requested a warrant to enter and search the Fowler’s house, where they thought he was.

“We secured the residence from the outside and told (Fowler) we wanted to talk to him about threatening someone with a dangerous weapon,” Mitchell said.

By the time the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department obtained the warrant and the tactical team arrived around noon, Fowler opened the door.

Fowler was arrested for criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, a class C felony, punishable by up to 5 years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

He was taken by law enforcement to the Somerset County Jail, where he is currently being held.

South Sibley Road is a private road off Halls Bridge Road on Sibley Pond and was closed for several hours during the standoff.
