Cher got permission from her transgender son, Chaz Bono, to use his ‘dead name’ in his new memoir

Dear reveals the caring steps she took to include her transgender son, Chaz Bonoin her new memoir, claiming she got his approval to use her “dead name,” Chastity.

The singer made a heartfelt warning at the start of her memoir: Dear: The Memoirs, Part One, noting that she received Chaz’s blessing to use her so-called “dead name” before making the transition in 2008 in parts of her book.

“In this memoir, I call my son Chaz Chas, the name he used during the years covered in this book,” Cher wrote in the book. “Chaz has given his blessing for this use. In the next volume, at the appropriate time, I will call my son Chaz.

Chaz, the son of Cher and her late ex-husband Sonny Bono, began his transition just before turning 40 and legally changed his name and gender in 2010. While continuing the process, he made a documentary titled Becoming Chaz.

Cher, 78, has been transparent about her son’s transition, emphasizing that it’s a big change.

“It wasn’t easy,” the pop star said in a 2020 interview. “I remember calling and the old message (voicemail)… was on the phone, which was very difficult. “

While Cher initially had reservations, the singer eventually pulled herself together.

“You don’t really lose them. They’re just in a different shape,” she said of trans people during the interview.

She added that Chaz, now 55, was “incredibly happy”.

The star’s memoir sheds light on her childhood, her marriage to Sonny and the start of her music career.

The first part of Cher’s memoir will be available in stores on November 19.

In 2014, Chaz spoke exclusively to uInterview about his transition process. “I was extremely afraid of what others would think of me if I transitioned, and knowing that I would have to do it in the public eye was something that really scared me, and I thought I would get a lot criticism from people,” Bono told uInterview exclusively. “And I guess over time I worked on a lot of these things, and mostly I just realized that I need to take care of myself and my needs first and not worry so much about what others thought of me.
