Amorim urged to be the complete opposite of Guardiola in scathing criticism; Ferdinand explains Van Nistelrooy’s departure

Amorim urged to be the complete opposite of Guardiola in scathing criticism; Ferdinand explains Van Nistelrooy’s departure

Ruben Amorim has been asked to operate very differently at Manchester United than his Manchester City counterpart Pep Guardiola, while Rio Ferdinand has discussed the departure of Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Amorim has signed a contract with Man Utd until June 2027 after agreeing to take over following the sacking of Erik ten Hag. United paid Sporting CP €11m (£9.2m/$11.7m) for Amorim and his backroom team.

The Portuguese arrived at Carrington on Monday and was pictured meeting members of the club’s hierarchy, including Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox.

There seems to be big changes at United as Amorim likes to play 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1. This means United could sign new wingers, while wingers such as Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho are ready to take on different roles.

Additionally, Amorim will work closely with Ashworth to reorganize the team to his liking. This could involve the departure of some failed Ten Hag recruits and the capture of Sporting stars such as Viktor Gyokeres or Goncalo Inacio.

Man City boss Guardiola has tipped Amorim to succeed at United as the 39-year-old is one of the best young managers around.

But former United right-back Paul Parker criticized Guardiola and urged Amorim to forge his own path by playing more exciting football.

“I think the last thing we want is Pep’s support, we worry about playing this complex football and boring everyone,” Parker said (via MEN).

“This guarantee doesn’t work for anyone in my eyes, a lot of football fans are tired of it. But I think his style will change quickly.

The expert added: “The only thing the Premier League already has is Portuguese players, this league must have earned more from Premier League clubs than any other country in the world.

“So many clubs go there to sign their players and now they spend £10 million (compensation) to sign their managers. It’s a different league, so it will be really interesting to see how the new manager adapts to the Premier League. It’s so different.

Amorim’s arrival ends Van Nistelrooy’s tenure as interim coach. The legendary former striker helped United win three and draw one of his four games in charge, although he was always unlikely to stay under Amorim.

After revealing he “would have kept” Van Nistelrooy, Ferdinand said it was a “difficult” decision before adding: “I think (for) the manager it’s not an easy transition to to come in and be sitting next to you on the sidelines at Old Trafford, one of the most prolific strikers (in the club’s history).

“The fans love him. They loved him before, they love him even more now.

“And with every turn of results or every bump in the road, they will say bring Ruud in as manager.”
