The two teenagers from Melbourne were staying at the Nana Backpacker Hostel in Vang Vieng, a tourist town in the center of the country, before going for a drink at Jaidee Bar on November 11. It is believed that this is where the girls unwittingly consumed methanol.

According to 7News, locals believe the place has ties to the mafia, telling a reporter for the channel that it is known for methanol poisonings.

Methanol is commonly found in a range of products such as paint, fuel and cosmetics, but it is also sometimes added illegally to alcohol as a cheap substitute for ethanol. Drinking even a small amount can be fatal. Footage from Jaidee’s bar reveals he allegedly offered drugs on the menu to customers, including marijuana, magic mushrooms, opium and hash brownies.
